Deciding to apply for Newlife’s egg donating program was not a decision I took likely. I did as much research as I possibly could and weighed up the advantages and disadvantages. The advantages far out weighed any form of side-effects that might occur during/after the process. Being able to provide a parent(s) with the gift of a baby and forever changing their lives for the better, is an opportunity I could never turn down. I applied last year and was, after much anticipation, selected and confirmed for a donation in Cancun end of May 2017. The medical treatment began a few weeks before the trip to Cancun. Junette was amazing and helped me every step of the way. She is such a caring person. During the treatment I was sent for regular check-ups to ensure that my body is reacting the way it should and that everything is in order. Although the flight to Cancun took quite some time, almost 2 days, it was definitely worth it. Cancun is breathtakingly beautiful. We stayed in a 5-star resort and had access to a number of restaurants. I really enjoyed experiencing all the well-known Mexican cuisines first-hand, such as nachos, quesadillas, burritos, etc. The final stages of the ovarian stimulation, as well as the extraction had to take place in Cancun. As in South Africa, we went for regular check-ups in order to monitor progress and adjust dosages, if necessary. The Cancun fertility clinic was of a very high standard and the medical staff was very friendly and professional. They made me feel comfortable and secure. The extraction is estimated to take about 15min, in my case it took a bit longer, seeing as I was constantly moving. I was under anaesthesia, but according to the doctor, they had difficulty keeping my body still. I was completely unaware of this, because I was unconscious and not in control of my actions. Even though the extraction took longer, it went very well. I experienced slight discomfort afterwards, but this disappeared within a few days.
